At some point in our lives we are all faced with significant losses. Whether it be: the loss of a loved one, the loss of a pet, losses due to circumstances such as a job or career, a change of health or financial status, separation and divorce; rape & incest; loss can be devastating and can disrupt one’s life for many years. How one handles loss is different for everyone and depends upon numerous factors such as: the type of loss, the circumstances surrounding the loss, the degree of support from family, friends, and community, and the history of previous losses.
Certain losses can have a negative social stigma and may be fearful, embarassing, and shameful to talk about with others such as deaths from suicide, AIDS, and abortion. Other types of losses may be socially minimized and unprocessed such as a miscarriage. Losses that remain blocked and unprocessed for years can and do manifest symptomatically as chronic depression, anxiety, nightmares, flashbacks and social avoidance. Physical symptoms and maladies such as headaches, chronic-fatigue, insomnia, digestive issues, eating disorders, and addictions can also manifest and become problematic.
Not all losses and situations require grief counseling. Grief counseling is, however the best antidote in helping process significant losses where living day-to-day becomes problematic after a certain period of time after the loss.
